If you’re thinking about hiring a financial coach, one of the first questions is probably: How much is this going to cost me?

It’s a fair question. Spending money to fix your money can feel backwards, especially when you already feel stretched. So let’s talk about what financial coaching usually costs, what you’re actually paying for, and how to know if it’s worth it.

What does a financial coach do?

A financial coach helps you understand where your money is going, build a simple system for spending, saving, and paying off debt, and stick with it. A coach doesn’t manage your money or sell you investments. A coach teaches you how to run your money with confidence.

That’s different from a financial advisor, who usually manages investments. Many people work with a coach first so they’re ready to work with an advisor later.

How much does financial coaching cost?

Prices vary a lot, but here’s what you’ll typically see:

Is financial coaching worth it?

Here’s what I see with my clients. Most of them earn good money and still feel behind. They’re not bad with money. Nobody ever showed them how to build a system that fits a busy life.

Once we get started and your finances are organized, many clients find they’re saving more than they invest in coaching. On average, my clients save about $2,300 a month after coaching. (I work with clients across a range of incomes, and every situation is different, so results vary.)

And those savings don’t end when the program does. The skills you learn keep paying off for years, so you stay better off financially long after we’re done working together.

Coaching is probably worth it if:

How I work with clients

I’m Karen Calderon, a financial coach in Los Angeles. My husband and I once carried over $200K of debt, so I know what it feels like to look fine on the outside and feel stressed about money on the inside.

My main program is Money Made Simple, a 4-month online group financial coaching program for career-driven professionals and couples. I meet with clients in person in Los Angeles, and my programs and sessions are also available online, so you can join from anywhere. I coach in English and Spanish.
