Growing Up First-Gen

In my immigrant household, we were taught how to work hard… not how to manage money.

So like many first-gen women, I believed earning more would fix everything.

I got the degrees, the career, the family. On the outside, I checked every box.

Inside, I was overwhelmed, exhausted, and constantly wondering: where did all our money go?

The Wake-Up Call

Even though my husband and I were making good money, we were carrying over $200,000 of debt — student loans and a property investment we couldn’t truly afford.

So we kept hustling, thinking more income would fix it.
It didn’t.

Then one day, after another “quick” Target run, I checked our bank account… and it was almost zero.

For a moment, I thought we’d been robbed.

But the truth was harder:
we were robbing ourselves — of peace, freedom, and our kids’ future.

That was my breaking point.
I got honest.
I learned everything I could.
And I built simple systems that fit our life — not someone else’s perfect spreadsheet.

Our marriage got stronger.
We stopped guessing.
We finally felt aligned.

And we paid off the last $100,000 in just 15 months.

What That Journey Taught Me

It didn’t just change our finances.
It changed my confidence, my peace, and my entire approach to life.

It taught me something powerful:
You can be smart, successful, and hard-working… and still feel lost with money if no one ever taught you how.

And that’s why I do this work.
